JACKSON, Miss. | Three days removed from a loss in the regular season finale, sixth-seeded Alabama State shocked third-seeded Jackson State 58-49 at the Lee E. Williams Athletic Assembly Center late Tuesday night.
Alabama State (12-18) had three players in double figures in the win, led by
Jacoby Ross with 14 off the bench. He also grabbed six rebounds and hit on 6-of-11 shots from the floor in the victory.
Tobi Ewuosho added 10 points and six rebounds, while
Reginald Gee chipped in 10 points and four rebounds.
The Hornets finished the night shooting 41.7 (20-of-48) percent from the floor and 40 (6-of-15) percent from beyond the arc on the night. They also shot 57.1 (12-of-21) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 11 Jackson State turnovers.
Meanwhile, Chris Howell was the lone player in double figures with 10 for the Tigers on 3-of-7 shooting from the floor. Meanwhile, Jayveous McKinnis grabbed 14 rebounds for Jackson State, who finished the night shooting 31.9 (15-of-47) percent from the floor and 26.7 (4-of-15) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 62.5 (15-of-24) percent from the free throw line.
The Hornets led by as many as 16 in the second half before Jackson State was able to cut it 51-46 on a Dontelius Ross three-pointer with 3:24 to play. Alabama State answered with a Ross jumper with 3:05 to play to push the lead back to 53-46. The lead stayed that way until Venjie Wallis hit one of two free throws for Jackson State to trim the lead 53-47 with 2:14 to play, and a McKinnis dunk trimmed it to 53-49 with 1:41 to play.
That was as close as Jackson State could get, as Alabama State used a free throw from Ross with 1:32 to play, a three-pointer from Ewuosho extended the lead to 57-49 with just 41 seconds to play.
Alabama State returns to action in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) semifinals against Texas Southern Friday night at Bill Harris Arena. Tip time is set for 8:30 pm, and the game can be seen on ESPN3.
