MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Southern Miss used a four-run third inning to defeat Alabama State 5-0 in non-conference action at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex Wednesday night.

Southern Miss (14-10) used a three-run home run by Lacey Sumerlin to drive in Destini Brown and Chase Nelson for the early 3-0 lead, after both players were walked in the inning. They added another run when Heather Hill singled in Alyssa Davis for a 4-0 lead.

The Golden Eagles would add another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Madison Rayner to drive in Sumerlin.

Justine Jean (4-5) suffered the loss for Alabama State (9-10) as she worked 2.2 innings and allowed four runs (all earned) off of six hits, while walking four. Charlene Castro came on to log 4.1 innings in relief and allowed just one off of six hits with five strikeouts. Abby Trahan picked up the win for Southern Miss, working 6.0 innings and allowing five hits while striking out five. Makenna Pierce came on in the seventh and did not allow a baserunner.

Five different Lady Hornets picked up a hit in the loss.

Alabama State returns to action this weekend as they open conference play against Grambling State at the Barbara Williams Complex. First pitch for the contest on Friday is at 6 pm, with a doubleheader scheduled for 1 pm.

Admission is free to all home softball games.
