MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State rebounded after a series-opening loss to Alabama A&M, with an 11-1 run-rule Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over the Bulldogs at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Saturday night.
Alabama State (10-9, 5-2 SWAC) jumped ahead early with five runs in the first, before they added another three in the second to build an insurmountable 8-0 lead early in the contest. The Hornets got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when
Santiago Garcia singled home
Eriq White for the 1-0 lead, before a bases loaded walk to
Cristopher DeGuzman pushed home another run.
The Hornets added two more on a two-run single by
Hunter May, before he stole second and allowed DeGuzman to score on the fielding error by the shortstop for the 5-0 lead.
Alabama State added three more in the second on a sacrifice fly from
Eriq White and an RBI single from
Chris Lewis to push the lead to 7-0. The lead grew as DeGuzman recorded a sacrifice fly to score Garcia and push the lead to 8-0.
After Alabama A&M scored their lone run in the third, the Hornets answered with one of their own on a wild pitch to push the lead to 9-1. They would another in the six on a fielding error, before walking off in the eighth on an RBI single by Garcia for the 11-1 margin.
Four Hornets picked up multiple hits on the night including Garcia who finished 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and a pair runs batted in.
Yamil Pagan finished 2-for-5 with a run scored, while White finished 2-for-4 with a pair of runs scored and an RBI.
Noel Cheneau finished 2-for-3 with a pair of walks on the night.
Darren Kelly (2-0) picked up his second consecutive victory, working 6.2 innings and allowed just one run off of three hits. He also struck out six in the victory.
The two teams in the rubber game of the series Sunday afternoon at 1 pm inside the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Admission is $5 for all home baseball games.
