@BamaStateSB completes sweep of Grambling State

Lady Hornets open conference play undefeated

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State completed the series sweep over Grambling State with a doubleheader win Saturday afternoon in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at the Barbara Williams Complex.

Alabama State (12-10, 3-0 SWAC) won game one 5-3, before run-ruling the Tigers in the nightcap 12-0. The Lady Hornets jumped ahead early with a first inning home run from Alexis Sydnor, before Grambling State tied the game at 1-1 in the third.

Alabama State erupted for three runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single from Sydnor, an RBI double from Charlene Castro and a home run from Vanessa Bradford to extend the lead to 5-1. Grambling State added a pair of runs in the seventh for the final margin.

In the opener, Sydnor finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs batted, while Castro also collected a pair of hits finishing 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored. Bradford got credit for the win as she worked 4.1 innings and allowed just one run on three hits.

Meanwhile, in the nightcap, Alabama State jumped out to a seven run lead after one inning of play en route to the run-rule victory. The Lady Hornets got a two-run single from Sydnor to start things off for the 2-0 lead, before Kristin Gunter followed with an RBI triple to push the lead to 3-0. The Lady Hornets also got a sacrifice fly in the inning, and a pair of doubles from Teah Steel (two-run double) and Aimee Felices.

Alabama State added five more runs in the third highlighted by doubles off the bats of Marina Clark and Sydnor – both two-run doubles.

Gunter finished the nightcap 3-for-3 with a run scored and a pair of runs batted in, while Sydnor finished 2-for-3 and Steel 2-for-2 to sweep the series. Justine Jean picked up the win with a complete game effort, scattering eight hits in the win.

Alabama State returns to action Wednesday against North Alabama on the road in Florence (Ala.) for a single beginning at 2 pm.
