BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State grabbed the doubles point from Samford to open the match, but dropped four singles matches en route to falling 4-3 to the Bulldogs Saturday afternoon.
Alabama State picked up the doubles point behind wins at number one doubles and number two doubles in the match. The number one team of
Worthy Goldman and
Maria Popova picked up a 6-0 victory over Samford's Elsa Pool and Natalia De Ugarte to get the match started, before the number two team of
Reka Szentes and
Urska Velec picked up a 6-4 win to pick up the point and put the Lady Hornets up 1-0.
The Lady Hornets won a pair of singles matches on the day, with Lea Krajcoviocova picking up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at number two singles; while Velec picked up a three-set win (3-6, 6-4, 6-4) at number five over Arianna Beltrame.
One other match went three sets with Samford's Grace Jennings picking up a 6-2, 4-6, 7-5 win over Szentes at number one, before the match was clinched when Mary Katherine Lewis defeated Alabama State's
Marija Blazevic 7-5, 7-5 at number six singles.
Alabama State returns to action a week from today as they host Alabama A&M at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
