@BamaStateBB falls to ninth-ranked Georgia

Hornets continue five-game road swing at Samford Wednesday

ATHENS, Ga. | Ninth-ranked Georgia used five extra base hits and a school record 10 stolen bases to defeat Alabama State 11-3 in non-conference action at Foley Field Tuesday night.

Georgia (10-2) scored in each of the first four innings, including three in the second when they took advantage of a solo shot from Shane Marshall to push the lead to 2-0. They would later score two more on a throwing error to push the lead to 4-0, before the Hornets were able to get on the board in the top half of the third inning after a leadoff walk to Hunter May and single from Cristopher DeGuzman. A wild pitch by the Bulldogs moved both runners up 90 feet before May scored on an RBI groundout.

Alabama State (7-5) had no answer for the Bulldogs as they scored four more runs in the sixth to push the lead to 11-1, before Alabama State added one of their own in the top half of the seventh inning when Santiago Garcia – who doubled to lead off the inning – scored on a DeGuzman fielder's choice.

AJ Stinson (0-2), one of four pitchers used by the Hornets on the night, suffered the loss in his first collegiate start. He went 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) off of four hits and struck out three. Meanwhile, Tim Elliott (1-0) picked up the win for Georgia as he worked 6.0 innings and allowed just one run off of three hits, and struck out seven.

Alabama State had six different players pick up hits, including Hunter May who finished 1-for-2 with a run scored and pair of walks. Santiago Garcia added a double, while Yamil Pagan and DeGuzman added RBIs for the Hornets.

How it Happened
Georgia got on the board in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead after a one-out walk to Riley King. After an infield out, King stole second and came around score on an RBI single by LJ Talley for the early 1-0 lead.

The Bulldogs were able to get back on the board in the second on the first career home run for Shane Marshall to lead off the inning and push the Bulldogs lead to 2-0. They added to the lead after a hit by pitch and walk (with a pair of stolen bases) put runners and second and third, before a throwing error allowed a pair of runs to score – pushing the lead to 4-0.

Alabama State was able to get on the board in the third inning after a leadoff walk to Hunter May and a single by Cristopher DeGuzman. After a wild pitch moved the runners to second and third, Yamil Pagan scored May on an RBI groundout to short trimming the lead to 4-1.

Georgia wasted no time in getting back on the board, using a two-out walk to Marshall, who advanced to third on a double off the left field wall by Randon Jernigan. He would later score on a Channing Walker wild pitch after replacing starter, AJ Stinson, pushing the lead to 5-1.

The Bulldogs added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning with no outs, before Alabama State recorded back-to-back outs recorded by Trevor Jurjevich at third. Marshall drew a bases loaded walk to push the score to 6-1, before Jernigan used a big hop at short to beat out the throw to first to push the lead to 7-1.

Georgia got back on the board in the bottom of the sixth inning when Marshall led with a double to right, before advancing to third on a single by Jernigan. He would later score on a single by Tucker Maxwell to push the score to 8-1. They would add two more on a two-run single by Cam Shephard to push the lead to 10-1. John Cable pushed the lead to 11-1 with a single through the right side with two outs in the inning.

Alabama State loaded the bases in the seventh inning after a lead-off double from Santiago Garcia, before he was pushed to third on a single from Chris Lewis. Following a walk to May, DeGuzman delivered with a fielder's choice that scored Garcia from third to trim the deficit to 11-2.

The Hornets added another run after a two-out walk to Noel Cheneau, when Garcia hit a ball to left that was mishandled and allowed Cheneau to score to trim the score to 11-3.

Noteworthy
Freshman AJ Stinson got his first start of his collegiate career after a pair of relief appearances. The freshman went 2.2 innings, allowing five runs (three earned) off of four hits. He also walked four and struck out three.

Channing Walker made his fourth appearance of the season, and the 18th of his career for Alabama State when he came on in the third inning.

Hunter May extended his on-base streak to nine consecutive games when he walked in the third inning, marking the fifth game this season in which he has drawn a walk. Meanwhile, Cristopher DeGuzman extended his on-base streak to four consecutive games with a single in the same inning.

Trevor Jurjevich picked up his second double of the season in the fifth inning, his first since the opening game of the Purdue Fort Wayne series back in February. It is only the second extra base hit of the season for the junior, and his first hit since the second game of the series against the Mastadons (19 consecutive at bats without a hit – that includes five walks).

Gage Dollar came on to pitch in the bottom of the fifth inning, making his fourth appearance of the season – third out of the bullpen. It was Dollar's 16th appearance in his career and sixth out of the bullpen.
