ACWORTH, Ga. | Alabama State pounded out 13 hits and had four players with multiple hits as the Lady Hornets ran past Delaware State, 9-5, in the second game of the day of the HBCU Tournament at Patriot Park.
Alabama State (9-9) used seven runs combined in the first two innings Saturday to run out to a 7-0 lead, and pushed the lead 8-0 before Delaware State was able to get on the board. The Lady Hornets a two-run double from
Kristin Gunter to get on the board early, after a walk to
Kaylee Davis and a single from
Alexis Sydnor, for the 2-0 lead. They pushed the lead to 3-0 in the first when
Charlene Castro singled to score Gunter for the final run of the inning.
The Lady Hornets added four more in the second when Gunter reached on an infield single to score Davis for the second time on the day. The lead was pushed to 5-0 when Castro recorded another RBI single, followed by an RBI single from
Vanessa Bradford to push the lead to 6-0. The game was put out of reach when
Alexis Massie recorded a sacrifice fly for the 7-0 lead.
Castro led the way at the plate for the Lady Hornets as she went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three runs batted in, while Sydnor finished 3-for-5 with three runs scored. Bradford finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Gunter 2-for-3 with three runs batted in a pair of runs scored.
Bradford got the win on the mound, logging 4.2 innings and allowing three runs (two earned) off of four hits with five strikeouts. Castro came in to finish off the game with 2.1 innings pitched and allowed two runs (no earned) off of two hits, with a pair of strikeouts.
