MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Yamil Pagan hit a pair of home runs to power Alabama State to a 14-6 Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) victory over Alcorn State at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Friday night.
Alabama State (17-15, 11-3 SWAC) fell behind in the second inning, before scoring five unanswered including a two-run shot by Pagan in the bottom half of the second inning to give the Hornets a 3-2 lead. After Alcorn State (10-20, 6-9 SWAC) scored a pair to trim the deficit to 5-4, Alabama State answered with six in the sixth to pull away 11-4.
The Hornets added three in the eighth including the second home run from Pagan on the night. The senior finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and five runs batted in.
Cameron Hearn picked up a pair of hits and a season-high three runs batted in, while three others players –
Chris Lewis,
Noel Cheneau and
Santiago Garcia – each picked up a pair of hits in the win.
Alabama State pounded out 13 hits in the win, and also reached base 14 other times either by walk (11) or hit by pitch.
Jeremy Rivera (5-2) picked up the win, working 6.2 innings and allowing six runs (all earned) on nine hits. He also walked five and struck out five, before giving way to
Nate Gerard (1.1 innings) and
Terrell McCall (1.0 inning).
The series continues Saturday with a doubleheader beginning at 2 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, and the games can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network. Tickets are available for the game at $5 each at the gate.
