MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State closed out spring practice with the Gold team winning the annual Black & Gold game, 10-0 at ASU Stadium Saturday afternoon.
The Hornets went through regular practice drills, until they took the field for an untimed 72-play scrimmage to close out spring in front of several fans and alumni on campus. The teams were split in two, with offense and defense on each, and the game was scored normally as it would be in the fall.
"The atmosphere today was unbelievable," Alabama State head coach
Donald Hill-Eley said. "There was a great crowd and great weather to end the spring. It was a beautiful day."
The only touchdown of the day was scored by the defense, as
Keenan Isaac picked up a second quarter fumble and ran it in for the score. Meanwhile,
Hunter Hanson kicked a 37-yard field goal in the third quarter for the only other points in the game.
The defense forced three other interceptions on the day from a trio of quarterbacks used –
Chris Scott,
Darryl Pearson, Jr. and
KHA'Darris Davis. The offense had a few big plays mixed in around the interceptions, including a 29-yard run from
Ezra Gray and a 24-yard pass from Scott to
Duran Bell.
"Defensively I think we did a good job of bringing different pressures and the players knowing where they were supposed to be," Eley said. "Offensively we are little down with several linemen being out today, but I still don't think they really executed the way we wanted to today.
"We gave up seven sacks, and turned the ball over collectively four times. That was our Achilles heel last season, and we have to get to the room as coaches and decide what we can do offensively and hang our hats on that."
The Hornets wrapped up three weeks of practice during spring, and go into the summer looking to get better.
"The biggest transition will happen throughout the summer," Eley said. "The coaches have to get back and dissect either, what we are doing or who we have doing it. They need to come away from that and know where we can be competitive next fall."
