@BamaStateSB falls in doubleheader against Alabama A&M

Alabama A&M sweeps the season series

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped a pair of games to Alabama A&M in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, dropping both games 9-3 and 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.
 
Alabama State fell in the first game 9-3, before having a chance to win the second game after forcing extra innings.
 
Game One: Alabama A&M 9, Alabama State 3
 
Alabama A&M (19-14, 8-4 SWAC) scored first on an error by Alabama State (17-18, 8-6 SWAC) in the top of the second, before they pushed the lead to 4-0 in the top of the fifth.
 
Ariel McAtee and Tia Davis both hit a double in the top of the sixth to extend the lead to 9-0 before Alabama State's Hailey Walker answered with a home run to left, bringing in Charlene Castro to cut the score to 9-2. Amira James capped off the scoring effort with a home run to left center for the final margin.
 
Seven Lady Hornets finished with a hit in the game, while Justine Jean (8-8) suffered the loss as she allowed nine runs on 14 hits.
 
Game Two: Alabama A&M 5, Alabama State 4 (10)
 
Both teams scored in the first, with Alabama State getting a before Walker doubled down the left line and Skyler Sullivan singled to right center to give the Lady Hornets a 2-1 advantage. Alabama A&M tied the game in the top of the third when Scrivnor doubled to left field bringing in Lopez.
 
Alabama A&M extended the lead in the fourth and fifth with runs by Pozzi and Lopez.
 
Alabama State evened the score in the bottom of the seventh when Lopez walked Kaitlin Kilner and Gunter followed by a double by Walker to tie the game 4-4. The two teams battled for two scoreless innings before Pozzi singled to left field to give Alabama A&M a 5-4 lead. The Lady Hornets could not answer in the bottom half of the 10th inning.
 
Alabama State finished with 13 hits, including three each from Sullivan, Casey Durham and Walker; while Gunter finished with two. Sullivan suffered the loss in her first game back for the Lady Hornets, allowing nine hits and four runs, while Alyssa Lopez allowed nine hits and four runs as well.
 
Alabama State travels to Auburn (Ala.) for midweek action against the Tigers, with the game is set for 6 pm Wednesday.
