FLORENCE, Ala.| North Alabama scored six runs combined in the first two innings to pull away from Alabama State, 14-2 at Mike Lane Field in non-conference action Tuesday night.
North Alabama (10-26) scored three runs in the first and three more in the second to take a 6-0 lead, before Alabama State (20-16) was able to get on the board in the third to trim the deficit to 6-1.
Chris Lewis drove home
Cristopher DeGuzman with a sacrifice fly to left, after DeGuzman walked (moved over on a wild pitch) and advanced to third on an
Eriq White single.
However, the Lions responded with a single run in the fourth, fifth and sixth to extend the lead to 9-1, before a five-run seventh put the game out of reach. Alabama State got another run in the eighth on a walk drawn by
Cameron Hearn brought in
Noel Cheneau for the final margin.
Darrius Wright (2-3), one of six pitchers used on the night, suffered the loss as he worked just 1.2 innings and allowed six (all earned) runs on five hits. He walked four and struck out three.
Trevor Jurjevich was the last of the six pitchers used on the night, and was the most effective out of the bullpen as he worked 1.2 innings and allowed just one hit.
The Hornets were held to three hits with DeGuzman, White and
Santiago Garcia each picking up a single hit in the loss. Meanwhile, Keegan Foge (1-1) – one of five pitchers used on the night by North Alabama – worked 4.0 innings of scoreless and hitless relief, with a pair of strikeouts.
Alabama State returns to action in Huntsville (Ala.) against Alabama A&M in a three-game series beginning Thursday at 3 pm. The game can be heard on the Hornet Sports Network beginning at 2:45 pm.
