Both teams scored in the final inning

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alcorn State and Alabama State battled through six innings, until the Braves used a home run in the top of the seventh inning to power past Alabama State 7-5 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex Friday night.

Alabama State (17-20, 8-7 SWAC) jumped on top in the third inning after the two teams traded a pair of scoreless innings when Alexis Sydnor and Kaylee Davis reached base, and scored on a Charlene Castro single to give the Lady Hornets a 2-0 lead. However, Alcorn State (13-17, 9-4 SWAC) came right back in the top of the fourth highlighted by a Brooke Roach triple to tie the score at 2-all.

Alcorn State took the lead on a fielding error by Alabama State to take a 3-2 lead, prior to Desiera Lindsey scored on a Simone McKinney infield single to push the lead to 4-2. The Lady Hornets came right back to even the score in the bottom of the fourth inning when Aimee Felices doubled to drive in Teah Steele to cut the lead to 4-3, before Alexis Sydnor tied the game up with a triple to score Felices.

However, the Braves took the lead for good in the top half of the seventh inning on an Amari Ramsey two-run home run to right for a 6-4 lead. The Braves would add an insurance run on a Roach double, before Alabama State got a run in the bottom half of the seventh inning on a Kaylee Davis infield hit before the game ended with the bases loaded.

Justine Jean (7-11) suffered the loss for Alabama State, working 6.1 innings and giving up seven runs on 12 hits; before Castro came in to pitch the final hitless 0.2 innings. Ambria Dorsey (4-9) picked up the win for Alcorn State, working 6.1 innings, before Paige Taylor pitched the final 0.2 innings for her first save of the season.
