MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State picked up double digit hits in both games against Alcorn State Saturday as the Lady Hornets celebrated Senior Day with a doubleheader sweep at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
Alabama State picked up 13 hits in each contest, winning game one 10-9 and game two 11-8.
Amira James recorded four hits, including two home runs for Alabama State (19-20, 10-7 SWAC), while four players each recorded a pair of hits in the second game.
Game One: Alabama State 10, Alcorn State 9
Casey Durham led off the bottom of the first with a single down the left line to open up things for the Lady Hornets.
Kaylee Davis followed with a single to the pitcher as Durham stole third, and gave Alabama State the 1-0 lead before
Vanessa Bradford doubled to left center to bring in
Kristin Gunter. That gave Alabama State a 2-0 lead early in the game.
Alabama State extended its lead in the second inning on an error by Alcorn State (13-19, 9-6 SWAC) to score
Kimberlee Owens and Davis for the 4-0 lead.
Charlene Castro followed that with a double to bring in Gunter and
Alexis Sydnor for the 6-0 lead.
Alcorn State chipped away and pulled within a run in the fifth inning, before the Lady Braves tied the scored on a double in the seventh.
James capped off the win with a home run – her second of the game - to right center to give the Lady Hornets the 10-9 victory in walk-off fashion.
Paige Taylor (9-8) suffered the loss for Alcorn State, working 6.1 innings and giving up 10 runs on 13 hits, while
Charlene Castro (4-2) earned the win for Alabama State, scattering nine hits and seven runs.
Game Two: Alabama State 11, Alcorn State 8
Alabama State made quick work of the Lady Braves in the first inning as they scored six runs, led by James with a home run to right center for the 4-1 lead.
Alexis Massie and
Teah Steele each recorded a hit, and scored, to close the first and give Alabama State a 6-1 advantage.
Massie doubled and Davis singled in the bottom of the third to extend the lead to 8-1, before the Lady Braves answered back by scoring four runs in the top of the fifth to cut the lead to 11-5. Victoria Tyler doubled down the left line and Sandrea Hord singled to bring in two Lady Braves, and cut the score to 11-8 before Alabama State shut down the Lady Braves in the seventh for the win.
Alabama State returns to action in a non-conference doubleheader against Savannah State on April 23. The first game is set for 2 pm (EST) in Savannah (Ga.).
