@BamaStateBB drops pair of games to South Alabama Tuesday

Hornets return to action Wednesday at home against Florida A&M

MONTGOMERY, Ala.| Alabama State dropped a pair of games to South Alabama at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Tuesday afternoon, in a rare midweek non-conference doubleheader.

Alabama State (22-19) and South Alabama (21-20) resumed their game from February 19 in which the Hornets trailed 4-1 in the bottom of the fourth inning. South Alabama used a six-run fourth inning on Tuesday to pull away from Alabama State, and win the first game of the doubleheader 14-2.

Ricardo Rivera (5-3), who did not throw a pitch in the game on Tuesday, was hit with the loss as he got the start back in February and gave up four runs. Gage Dollar started the day for Alabama State and lasted 2.1 innings, giving up eight runs (only four earned) on eight hits with a pair of strikeouts. Britt Buckelew came on to record the final out for the Hornets.

Alabama State was held to five hits, one of those a lead-off home run from Yamil Pagan back in February. He would drive in the other run on a bases loaded walk in the seventh inning to score Chris Lewis for the final margin, as the Hornets left the bases loaded in the seventh.

In the nightcap, South Alabama took advantage of three errors on the same play to score three runs in the first inning and pull away for a 13-0 run-rule shortened game. The game stayed 5-0 until the sixth when South Alabama erupted for six runs to pull away from Alabama State.

The Hornets were held to just four hits in the game by South Alabama starter Patrick McBride (1-2), who worked seven innings and struck out five, while only walking one. Meanwhile, Manny Bezares (0-1) got the start for the Hornets and worked the first inning and allowed three runs (only one earned) while walking three. He was one of four pitchers used on the day by Alabama State, with Channing Walker working 3.1 innings and allowed two runs (both earned) on three hits with four strikeouts.

Alabama State was shut out for the first time since March 16 of last year by Jackson State, and for just the 13th time since 2012 – a span of 424 games.

Alabama State returns to action Wednesday afternoon at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, with first pitch scheduled for 4 pm. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network, and tickets for the game are $5 at the gate on the day of the game.
