BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State senior right handed pitcher
Darren Kelly was the named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Pitcher of the Week for his performance against Mississippi Valley State, announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Kelly (4-0, 1.18 ERA) recorded a win in a run-rule victory over Mississippi Valley State, going 7.0 innings and allowing just one hit. He allowed a pair of runs, but struck out seven in picking up his fourth win of the season; and his second Pitcher of the Week honor.
This season, he has walked just 10 and struck 41 batters in 38.0 innings pitched (seven starts) following Tommy John surgery last season. Kelly has allowed just seven total runs, five of which have been earned on 17 hits; while opponents are hitting just .130 against him on the year.
Alabama State (16-13, 10-3 SWAC) returns to action Tuesday night at home against Florida A&M with first pitch scheduled for 4 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex, before hitting the road to face Troy Wednesday night. Both games will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
