TUSCALOOSA, Ala. | Alabama State jumped on top of eighth-seeded Alabama early in the opening round of NCAA Regional play, before falling 8-2 to the Crimson Tide in front of a capacity crowd at Rhoads Stadium Friday night.
Alabama State opened the contest with three one-out singles by
Kaylee Davis,
Alexis Sydnor and
Kristin Gunter to load the bases for the Lady Hornets.
Charlene Castro followed with a sacrifice fly to right to get Alabama State on the board with a 1-0 lead.
Alabama answered in the bottom of the first loading the bases with back-to-back singles before driving in a pair to take a 2-1 lead. They were able to open the game up in the fourth highlighted by a three-run home run by Kaylee Tow for an 8-1 lead. Alabama State was able to get one more run in the seventh inning when
Marina Clark singled to center to drive in
Amira James.
Krystal Goodman (11-10) picked up the win, allowing six hits and one run; while
Justine Jean (12-13) suffered the loss for the Lady Hornets, working four innings and allowing eight runs on seven hits.
Skyler Sullivan pitched the final two innings and gave up two hits.
Alabama State returns to action in the Tuscaloosa Regional tomorrow at 3:30 pm against Lipscomb, and the game can be seen on ESPN3.
