EDINBURG, Texas | UTRGV scored early and was able to pull away from Alabama State in a 6-0 decision in the final game of the season-opening tournament at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex Saturday night.
UTRGV (1-1) got on the board in the ninth minute of the match on a goal by Emily Zapata to take a 1-0 lead, before adding another goal by Zapata in the 14th minute to push the lead to 2-0. They were able to add three more goals, all by Sarah Bonney, to push the lead to 5-0 at the intermission.
Alabama State (0-2) was unable to rebound in the second half, as UTRGV added the final goal in 51st minute for the final margin.
The Lady Hornets were able to get five shots off in the loss on the road.
UP NEXT
Alabama State will be off for 10 days, before returning home to face Faulkner at the ASU Soccer Complex. The match is scheduled for September 3 at 6 pm, and admission is free to all home soccer matches.

NOTEWORTHY
Alabama State dropped their second consecutive match to open the 2019 season, and the first match in school history against UTRGV – the team's first meeting with the home team.
The Lady Hornets were able to get off five shots in the loss, however, they allowed 19 shots by UTRGV. The home team got nine shots off on goal, while Alabama State was held to just one shot on goal.
Alabama State dropped their first two games for the fifth consecutive season. The last time the Lady Hornets won one of their first two games came in 2014 when they defeated South Carolina State 1-0 (August 24, 2014).
