@BamaStateTennis competes well in first fall tournament

MACON, Ga. | The Alabama State tennis programs opened the 2019 fall campaign at the Mercer Gridiron Classic over the weekend, recording several victories.
 
After falling in Flight A Singles, Chris Andre and Alexis Collard each won a match in the consolation bracket before falling in the quarterfinals. Andre defeated Clement Hamel of Stetson, while Collard recorded a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Winthrop's Miha Velicki.
 
Also, in singles play, Juan Rodriguez reached the semifinals in the Flight B Consolation after falling in the single elimination round. The sophomore recorded a win over Carlos Garcia of Georgia Southern 6-3, 6-7 (5), 1-0 (4); before recording a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Lluis Miralles Miro of Winthrop 6-3, 6-4. Also, in the consolation bracket of Flight B, Luka Markovic defeated Dillon Gooch of UNC-Wilmington 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (6) in the finals of Bracket 2.
 
In Flight C singles action, Andrej Trajkovski defeated Sachin Khurana of Mercer 6-2, 2-6, 6-4 in the opening round before falling to Drew Lahay of Kennesaw State in the Round of 16.
 
In doubles action, the team of Collard and Andre collected a win in the Flight A Consolation bracket over Murphy McCullough and Jonathan Morales of Georgia Southern, 6-1; while Trajkovski and Alejo Calvis picked up a pair of wins in the Flight B Consolation bracket.
 
On the women's side, Madalena Andrade picked up her first win of the fall season with a 7-5, 7-6 (4) victory over Erin Allen of Belmont in the Flight A single elimination bracket before falling in the Round of 16. Meanwhile, Maria Popova picked up a win in the Flight A consolation bracket with a 4-6, 3-0 (retired) win over Constanza Gorches of North Florida.
 
The Lady Hornets picked up several wins in the Flight B bracket led by Bea Acena with a pair of wins beginning with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ericka Chavarria of Mercer. She followed that with a win over Melody Cantrell of Kennesaw State 6-0, 6-2; before falling to Sean Lodzki of North Florida 7-6 (3), 6-2 in the quarterfinals.
 
Salome Sposetti Ponzetti also picked up a win in singles play in Flight B over Nikki Chrstiansen of Belmont 6-4, 6-3.
 
In doubles action, the team of Popova and Andrade picked up a 6-4 win in Flight A consolation action over Hannah Daniel and Charlotte Can Diemen of Georgia Southern; while a pair of teams picked up wins in the Flight B bracket. Marija Blazevic and Urska Velec picked up a win over Belmont's Terra Sheldon and Taylor Trondson; while Acena and Ponzetti picked up a 6-2 victory over Florida Southern's Gabby Hesse and Lola Asis.
