BIRMINGHAM, Ala. |Â Alabama A&M pulled away from Alabama State with a strong third quarter en route to a 75-48 win in SWAC play at Bill Harris Arena Saturday afternoon.
Â
The Bulldogs (7-9, 3-2 SWAC) outscored the Lady Hornets (5-11, 2-3 SWAC) by 14 in the pivotal third quarter and rode that momentum to a victory in the first of two meetings this season between the long-time, in-state rivals.
Â
Jayla Crawford stayed hot shooting the ball for ASU, scoring in double digits once again in conference play. Crawford was the only Hornet in double figures in the game, scoring 11 points. Sophomore
Ayana Emmanuel was the team leader with six rebounds, while
Courtney Lee led with four assists. Â
Â
Victoria Harvey scored nine points, grabbed three boards and turned in a team-best, 9.0 plus-minus in the game.
Kaeani Berry was efficient on the floor as well posting a 6.0 plus-minus after scoring seven points and blocking a couple of shots in just 11 minutes of game time.
Â
Alabama A&M made half of their shot attempts (26-of-52) on the afternoon and was led offensively by reigning SWAC Player of the Week Dariauna Lewis, who finished with 16 points.
Â
Notable
- With 11 points in the first half alone,
Jayla Crawford has now scored in double-digits in all but one SWAC contest this season.
Â
- ASU will look to split the season series with Alabama A&M when the Bulldogs pay a visit to the Dunn-Oliver Acadome on February 15. The teams split last season, as well, with the road teams winning both matchups.
Â
- Before Saturday,
Ayana Emmanuel had scored in double figures in five of the last six contests.
Â
Up Next
Since Alabama State and Alabama A&M are "travel partners", the teams will not play this Monday like a normal week. However, the Lady Hornets will hit the road again next weekend to face SWAC foes Southern and Alcorn State on Saturday and Monday, respectively.
