@BamaStateWBB Stumbles at Southern Saturday

BATON ROUGE, La. | Southern's Brittany Rose scored 18 points to lead the Lady Jaguars past Alabama State, 69-47, at the F.G. Clark Activity Center in Southwestern Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Lady Hornets (5-12, 2-4 SWAC) got off to a slow start but never quit fighting until the end. ASU cut the deficit to just 12 with four minutes remaining, but Southern (7-11, 5-2 SWAC) slammed the door shut with a 10-0 run in the final 2:57 of the contest.

Alabama State was the beneficiary of good shooting days for both Aniyah Smith and Jayla Crawford, both of whom reached double figures scoring. Smith led the team with 14 points, while Crawford continued her hot streak in conference play with 10 of her own.

Sophomore Kaeani Berry led the Lady Hornets on the boards, snatching six rebounds – which was tied for the most by any player.

Rose paced the Lady Jaguars with her 18-point outburst, shooting better than 50 percent (7-for-13) from the floor and knocking down a pair of three-pointers. Southern's Jaden Towner also reached double figures with 10 points, thanks to a couple of three-pointers of her own.

Notable
- Saturday marked the 10th different starting lineup that Coach Freda Freeman-Jackson has used through 17 games in the 2019-2020 season.

- Jayla Crawford once again scored in double figures for ASU with XX in the contest. Crawford has scored at least 10 points in five of the Lady Hornets' six SWAC games this season.

- The game was just the second time this season that Alabama State shot at least 40 percent from the field and lost. Before Saturday, ASU was 4-1 in games when it eclipsed the 40-percent mark – 1-7 in other games.
