@BamaStateTennis opens 2020 campaign this weekend

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The three-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) tennis teams open their 2020 seasons this weekend with matches in Montgomery and Troy.

The Alabama State men, who finished 12-10 last season overall before advancing to the NCAA Tournament, open the season with Point University on Friday at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 pm.

They will stay at home to face West Alabama Sunday afternoon at 1 pm.

Alabama State and Point met last year at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, with Alabama State winning that match 5-2 overall. The Hornets dropped the doubles point, before storming back to win five of the six singles matches to earn the win. Meanwhile, the Hornets dropped a 4-3 decision to West Alabama at home last season, winning three singles matches after dropping the doubles point.

The Hornets return five players from their 2019 squad that claimed the conference crown in Chris Andre, Alejo Calvis, Alexis Collard, Juan Rodriguez and Andrej Trajkovski.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, Alabama State opens on the road against Troy Saturday at 1:30 pm, before returning home for a match against West Alabama on Sunday at 1 pm.

The Lady Hornets, who finished 13-9 overall last season before advancing to the NCAA Tournament, dropped matches against both squads last season by identical 6-1 scores. In the match against West Alabama they were able to pick up a win at number two singles, while against Troy they picked up a win at number six singles.

Alabama State returns three players from their championship squad a year ago in Marija Blazevic, Maria Popova and Urska Velec.

Admission is free to all home tennis matches.
