@BamaStateWBB Begins New Decade with SWAC Opener at Jackson State

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | After a successful decade that included back-to-back SWAC Tournament Championships in 2015 and 2016, Alabama State will turn the page to a new decade with its 2019-2020 conference opener at Jackson State Saturday.

In their last contest, the Lady Hornets fell at Ole Miss, 93-66, despite leading for a majority of the first
half. Alabama State led by three at the end of the first quarter and extended that lead to eight in the second quarter before a 22-6 Lady Rebel run. Redshirt senior Zomoria Clark recorded her first double-double of the season in the game at Ole Miss, scoring 11 points and grabbing a season-best 10 rebounds.

Lady Hornet Leaders
On the season, freshman Aniyah Smith leads the team in scoring at 11.4 points per game, while shooting 42.9 (30-for-70) percent from the floor. Smith also paces the team with 7.1 rebounds per game with a total of 57 (28 offensive, 29 defensive) in her eight games this season.

Ayana Emmanuel remains second on the team in scoring, averaging double figures at 10.3 per game while hitting 36.6 (15-of-41) percent of her three-point opportunities and 80 (24-for-30) percent from the charity stripe - both of which lead the team. As a team, Alabama State ranks fifth nationally with 17.2 offensive rebounds per game, while leading the league in free throws made, free throws attempted and total rebounds.

Taming the Tigers
Jackson State started its season 1-8 before picking up a big, 11-point win against Louisiana last time out.
