@BamaStateMBB knocks off defending champions

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State used a run in the final three minutes to defeat defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Prairie View A&M, 52-49 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday night.

Alabama State (4-17, 3-5 SWAC) was mired in a seven-minute scoring drought until Leon Daniels connected on a pair of free throws with 3:11 to play to pull the Hornets to within 49-46. That started an 8-0 run for Alabama State highlighted by a Brandon Battle layup with 23.8 seconds to play to give the Hornets a 50-49, before he took a charge on the defensive end of the floor just eight seconds later.

The Hornets were able to hold on down the stretch and used a pair of Jacoby Ross free throws to seal it.

Jeremy Hamilton scored a career-high 14 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the floor, including four three-pointers. Battle added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Tobi Ewuosho finished with nine points and 10 rebounds in the win. He also added four assists for the Hornets who shot 33.3 (17-of-51) percent from the floor and 33.3 (9-of-27) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 60 (9-of-15) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 30 turnovers.

Meanwhile, Darius Williams led Prairie View A&M (10-11, 6-2 SWAC) with 15 points, while Jonathan Jackson added 10, and Lenell Henry pulled down nine rebounds. The Panthers finished the night shooting 35.6 (21-of-59) percent from the floor and just 5.0 (1-of-20) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot just 50.0 (6-of-12) percent from the free throw line.

Alabama State returns to action Monday night, hosting Texas Southern at 7:30 pm on First Responders Night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
