MONTGOMERY, Ala. |Â It took 50 minutes of game action via two overtimes, but Prairie View A&M was able to sneak away with a 62-59 victory over Alabama State in Southwestern Athletic Conference action at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday night.
Â
The Lady Hornets (5-14, 2-6 SWAC) overcame a poor shooting night with a strong night defensively, holding the Lady Panthers (7-13, 4-4 SWAC) to just 33.9 percent from the floor. However, Alabama State had a few chances to seal the game late but the ball bounced in Prairie View's favor.
Â
After PVAM's Bernesha Peters knocked down a jumper with 20 seconds left to give the Lady Panthers a two-point advantage,
Ayana Emmanuel drove hard to the basket and drew a couple of free throws with just four seconds remaining. Emmanuel swished both to send the game to overtime, two of her 10 points in the game.
Â
At the end of the first overtime, the Lady Hornets missed a chance to take the lead on free throws but turned once again to their staunch defense to force yet another tough shot by PVAM that rimmed out to send it to double overtime. Both teams scored just two points in the first overtime.
Â
In the second stanza of overtime, the Lady Panthers forced seven ASU turnovers and pulled out to a six-point lead with six seconds left.
Taylor Aikerson pulled up from the Hornet logo on the ensuing possession and knocked down the three, but time expired as it went through the net.
Â
Jayla Crawford and
Aniyah Smith were two of ASU's three players in double figures in the contest. Crawford led the squad with 15 points and, once again, extended her streak of double-digit scoring games to seven straight – all of which coming in SWAC play. Smith, like Emmanuel, contributed 10 points to the 59-point effort.
Â
Prairie View took advantage of 30 Alabama State turnovers and scored 28 off of those turnovers. Tatyana Perez led the Lady Panthers with 17 points, five rebounds and four steals.
