MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fell, 81-54, to one of the top teams in the Southwestern Athletic Conference Monday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
The Lady Hornets (5-15, 2-7 SWAC) kept it close for most of the contest but ran out of gas in the second half. Texas Southern (12-7, 8-1 SWAC) pulled away with the big win thanks to a 22-point advantage (47-25) in the second half alone.
Paced by a trio of big performances from
Ayana Emmanuel,
Aniyah Smith and
Courtney Lee, ASU gave TSU all they could handle in the first half as they took just a five-point lead to the break. Emmanuel led the squad with 13 points, while Smith and Lee both finished with 10 points.
As a team, Alabama State shot just 30.8 percent from the floor, including a tough night from behind the arc at 1-for-11. Meanwhile, Texas Southern shot 43.3 percent and knocked down six of its 19 three-point attempts.
One of the top rebounders in the country, Niya Mitchell grabbed 16 boards on top of 16 points for the Lady Tigers to lead all players in both categories. Ataiya Bridges and Ciani Cryor joined Mitchell in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
