Alabama State (2-3, 1-0 SWAC) claimed the doubles' point when they won matches at number one and number three, before getting a pair of victories in singles to stretch the lead to 3-0.
Urska Velec picked up a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Nandi Munyulwa of Southern at number four singles, before
Bea Acena picked up a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Shaeda Nickle of Southern.
Vivien Kutacova clinched the match for the Lady Hornets with a 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 victory over Anya King of Southern.
Alabama State returns to action Saturday afternoon against Jackson State, with the match starting at 1 pm.
