@BamaStateMBB falls to Southern, streak ends at five

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State had their five-game Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) winning streak snapped Saturday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome, falling to the Jaguars 56-44.

Alabama State (8-18, 7-6 SWAC) trailed by just one at halftime, before Southern took advantage of a sluggish start by the Hornets to start the second half to push the lead to double digits. Alabama State was able to get as close as eight with three minutes remaining, but Southern was able to put the game away late.

Kevin Holston led Alabama State with 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the free throw line, while DJ Heath added nine points in the loss. Brandon Battle pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds for the Hornets who finished the night shooting just 25.5 (12-of-47) percent from the floor and 23.5 (4-of-17) percent from beyond the arc.

They also shot 72.7 (16-of-22) percent from the free throw line.

Meanwhile, Micah Bradford led Southern with 12, while Amel Kuljuhovic added 10 points and nine rebounds for the Jaguars who finished the night shooting 43.4 (23-of-53) percent from the floor. They also shot 16.7 (3-of-18) percent from beyond the arc and just 46.7 (7-of-15) percent from the free throw line.

Alabama State returns to action Monday night against Alcorn State, with tip set for 7:30 pm at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The game will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network.
