MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped their second consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), falling to Southern 61-51 at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Saturday afternoon.
Alabama State (7-17, 4-9 SWAC) fell behind early to Southern in the opening quarter but battled back in the second to trail 32-24 at the intermission. However, the Lady Jags were able to open a 14-point lead heading to the fourth and Alabama State could only get as close as 10.
Aniyah Smith was the lone player in double figures for the Lady Hornets, finishing with 11 points and six rebounds while shooting 5-of-7 from the floor.
Tyesha Rudolph chipped in nine points, while
Courtney Lee added eight points and three rebounds.
Alabama State ended the night shooting 39.5 (17-of-43) percent from the floor and just 16.7 (2-of-12) percent from beyond the arc. They also finished the night at 60.0 (15-of-25) percent from the free throw line, while forcing 19 turnovers.
Meanwhile, Raven White led Southern with 12 points, while Caitlin Davis and Alyric Scott each added nine points. Southern finished the night shooting 44.4 (16-of-36) percent from the floor and 60. (3-of-5) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot 65.0 (26-of-40) percent from the free throw line.
Alabama State returns to action Monday night against Alcorn State, with tip set for 5:30 pm at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome. The game will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network.
