MONTGOMERY, Ala. | An exciting weekend of softball at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex came to an end the only way one could expect; a nail-biter that ended in an 8-7 win for Grambling over Alabama State.
Heading into the seventh inning, the two SWAC foes were all tied at six. A scrappy Grambling (3-12) team found a way to scratch across a pair of runs in the top of the last inning without the benefit of a hit in the frame.
The Lady Hornets (6-8) wouldn't quit fighting, though, as things moved into the bottom portion of the seventh. Montgomery-native
Jamaica Flowers made things interesting with a two-out, RBI triple to score
Alexis Massie – who singled to start the frame – but the rally ended there.
Alabama State started strong in the contest with three runs in the bottom of the first.
Kindall DeRamus got things started with a perfectly executed bunt, then made her way around to score after a sac bunt from
Alexis Sydnor and a wild pitch a few batters later. DeRamus scored three runs for the Lady Hornets in a 2-for-4 effort.
Sydnor officially finished the contest 3-for-3 with an RBI and a walk – she's now batting .500 (17-for-34) on the season and leads the team with eight runs driven in.
After Grambling battled back to tie things at three in the third inning, the two teams matched each other run-for-run until the seventh inning. The Tigers scored two in the top of the fourth answered by four runs from ASU in the bottom – before the two squads traded single runs in the sixth.
