@BamaStateBB comes from behind to defeat Toledo

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State trailed for most of the game until Jabronski Williams blasted his first collegiate home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Hornets the lead, and they held on for a 6-5 victory at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Friday night.

Alabama State (7-3) fell behind early with Toledo plating a pair of runs in each of the third and fourth innings to take a 5-1 lead, and the Rockets held that lead until Alabama State plated four in the fifth to tie the game up. The Hornets used a squeeze off the bat of Sebastian Colon to push across Chris Lewis in the inning to trim the lead to 5-2, before Williams delivered a triple to right center to clear the bases and tie the game at 5-all.

The game stayed that way until the second pitch to Williams in the bottom of the seventh inning, when he drove the 1-0 pitch out of the ballpark to give the Hornets a 6-5 lead.

Toledo had a chance to tie the game off Alabama State starter Jacknell Guzman (2-0) in the bottom of the eighth inning, but had a runner thrown out at home on a ball hit right back to the pitcher for the second out of the inning. The Rockets were able to get the leadoff man aboard in the top of the ninth inning, before Guzman tallied three consecutive strikeouts to end the game.

Williams finished the night 3-for-4 for the Hornets with four runs batted in, finishing a double short of the cycle. Chris Lewis finished 2-for-4 for Alabama State, who finished with nine hits on the night.

Guzman recorded his second complete game of the season, giving up five runs (three unearned) off six hits. He finished the game with eight strikeouts.

The two teams will play a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon starting at 1 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
