ITTA BENA, Miss. | Alabama State won their third consecutive game after coming from behind against Mississippi Valley State, defeating the Delta Devils 87-74 at the Harrison HPER Complex Saturday night.
Jacoby Ross came off the bench to lead Alabama State (6-17, 5-5 SWAC) to record his first double-double this season in 33 minutes of play. He finished with a season-high 26 points and 11 rebounds, finishing the night shooting 8-of-13 from the floor and connecting on 6-of-9 from beyond the arc.
AJ Farrar added 19 points and nine rebounds for Alabama State off the bench in the win.
Leon Daniels added 19 points and eight rebounds for the Hornets, who finished the night shooting 48.5 (32-of-65) percent from the floor and 45.2 (14-of-31) percent from beyond the arc. They also shot just 56.3 (9-of-16) percent from the free throw line, while pulling down a season-high 53 rebounds – including 17 on the offensive end.
Alabama State found themselves down early, failing to score in the first four minutes of the game, and found themselves down by as many as 11 in the first half. Daniels drew the Hornets to within two in the final 16 seconds of the half with a follow-up dunk, pulling the Hornets to within 36-34.
They were able to outscore Mississippi Valley State 42-25, beginning with that put back, over the next 16 minutes of action. They outscored the Delta Devils by 15 in the second half alone, with a season-high 53 second half points.
Quinton Alston led Mississippi Valley State (1-21, 1-9 SWAC) with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Torico Simmons added 19. Michael Green added 10 for the Delta Devils who finished the night shooting 38.4 (28-of-73) percent from the floor and 36.0 (9-of-25) percent from beyond the arc.
Alabama State returns to action Monday on the road against UAPB. The game is scheduled to tip at 7:30 and will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
