HAMMOND, La. | Led by outstanding pitching performances by
Alexa Veamoi and
Skyler Sullivan in the circle, Alabama State ended the 2020 Lion Classic with a 3-0 shutout of Buffalo Sunday at North Oak Park.
Veamoi (1-0) fanned seven batters and allowed just five baserunners – three walks and two hits – in 4.1 innings of scoreless work. Sullivan (1) took over in the fifth and retired the final eight batters of the game in order to earn the save.
The Lady Hornets (2-3) struck first with a couple of runs in the top of the second inning.
Kaley Anthony and
Samantha-Jo Mata both singled to set up the inning and both came across the plate later on a passed ball and a fielder's choice. Anthony finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.
Despite finishing hitless, freshman
Kindall DeRamus drove in one of the Lady Hornets' runs and reached base with a walk later in the game.
Alexis Massie ripped an RBI double in the seventh inning to close out the scoring and provide the insurance Alabama State needed to close out the game.
Buffalo (2-3) was able to pick up just two singles off the stellar pitching performances of Veamoi and Sullivan – with both coming in the first two innings of the game. Alexis Lucyshyn (0-3) wore the loss after allowing two unearned runs in two innings in the circle.
