MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped the Black and Gold Tournament Finale, 10-2, to Southern Miss Sunday afternoon at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
 
The Lady Hornets (7-13) fell behind early to the Golden Eagles (12-6) thanks to a six-run top of the second. Southern Miss scored the six runs on four hits and an error in the frame, highlighted by a bases-clearing triple by Alyssa Davis.
 
However, the team showed some fight and resiliency when faced with the large deficit – scrapping to piece together a couple of hits to score a couple of runs in the bottom of the fifth. Jamaica Flowers led things off with a walk and moved over to second after a Kindall DeRamus single.
 
Alexis Sydnor then did what she does best and produced at the plate by dropping an RBI single into shallow left field. She then purposely got caught in a rundown on the next pitch to help DeRamus cross home plate.
 
Sydnor provided most of the Alabama State offense once again on Sunday, recorded three of the team's four hits. In the five games this weekend, the senior was responsible for eight of the squad's 22 hits.
 
Southern Miss pitcher Savanna Wood (4-1) picked up the win after going the distance for the Golden Eagles – allowing just two runs on four hits with three strikeouts. Senior Justine Jean (1-4) suffered the loss in the circle for the Lady Hornets after 1.2 innings of work.

Alabama State will play its first mid-week home contest this Tuesday as the Middle Tennessee State Blue Raiders visit Montgomery for the afternoon. First pitch in game one of a doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. at the Barbara Williams Softball Complex.
