@BamaStateSB Splits Day One at HBCU Classic

NEW ORLEANS | Alabama State Softball split its first two games at the HBCU Classic at Wesley-Barrow Stadium Saturday after beating Grambling, 10-2, but falling to Southern, 7-8.

The Lady Hornets (8-14) took it to Grambling in the tournament opener with a run-rule victory in six innings – Alexis Sydnor stole home on a double steal to walk it off. Alabama State scored eight runs in the first three innings of the ballgame then added a pair in the sixth to finish it.

Kaley Anthony, Hailey Walker and Marina Clark all drove in a pair of runs apiece to spark the offense – highlighted by a couple of doubles from Walker and Clark.

In game two, the roles were reversed as Southern took a big lead early thanks to a seven-run third inning to give the Jaguars an 8-1 lead. Alabama State started clawing back slowly after that, beginning with a solo homer from Schylur Edwards in the fourth.

It added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to cut it to 8-5, after Mackenzie Byrd singled in a run and Kindall DeRamus knocked in two. Things got interesting in the bottom of the seventh as Alabama State cut it to one, but it couldn't get the tying run in.

Up Next
The final non-conference tournament of the season wraps up Sunday as Alabama State faces Grambling one more time and Prairie View A&M at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
