MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State used a four-hit night from
Chris Lewis and the bullpen to pick up a 4-2 victory over Valparaiso Wednesday night at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex.
Alabama State (14-4) trailed early in the game before
Jabronski Williams blasted a solo home run to right, his third of the season, to tie the game at 1-all. The Hornets added another run in the fourth, before Valparaiso (2-14) tied the contest in the fifth inning. It stayed that way until the sixth when
Trenton Jamison hammered a pitch to the right center field gap to plate two and give Alabama State a 4-2 lead that would hold up the remainder of the contest.
Lewis finished the night 4-for-5, with his last at-bat ending a fly out to left, while also collecting a double and a stolen base, while
Hunter May finished the night 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The Hornets turned to the bullpen in relief of starter
Jordan Gould who lasted 3.0 innings and gave up one run on three hits with four strikeouts. After
Narada Monge came in for an inning,
Trevor Jurjevich went 3.1 of scoreless relief, yielding just two hits and striking out.
Britt Buckelew, the final of five pitchers, came on in the ninth to pick up his first save of the season, recording a strikeout in the process.
Alabama State returns to action this weekend in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) play, hosting Alcorn State in a three-game series at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. First pitch is scheduled for 6 pm Friday night.
