@BamaStateTennis opens season against Alabama in women’s action

MONTGOMERY, Ala. | The three-time defending Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) champion Alabama State women's tennis team opens the 2021 season this weekend on the road against Alabama.

Alabama State returns three players from last year's team that had their season cut short due to the COVID-19 pandemic, including Bea Acena, who finished 5-2 on the year in singles play, including a perfect record in three matches at number six singles. She also finished 5-3 in doubles play and was perfect in six matches combined (singles and doubles) in conference play.

She is joined on the roster by fellow returner Madalena Andrade who went 4-4 in singles play, which included seven matches at number one singles, where she finished 4-3. She also finished 5-4 in doubles play, including 3-1 in conference play.

They are joined by junior Urska Velec, who went 4-4 in singles play last year, including 3-0 in conference play. During her freshman season, she helped lead Alabama State to the conference title and was named all-conference team. Velec was also named the SWAC Freshman of the Year in 2019, where she went 9-6 in singles play and 11-5 in doubles.

The match is scheduled to start at 4 pm in Tuscaloosa.
