MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State hits the road to face Texas Southern and Prairie View A&M beginning Saturday in Houston against the Lady Tigers.
Alabama State (5-1, 5-1 SWAC) enters the weekend tied atop the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings with Jackson State as the midway point of the 2021 season approaches Monday night. The Lady Hornets have the tiebreaker over Jackson State after a season-opening win and is one game ahead of Alcorn State and Southern.
Both games are scheduled for 5:30 pm and both will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
The Lady Hornets enter the game as one of the top scoring teams in the conference at 70.2 points per game and give up just 62.0 points per game. The game against Texas Southern on Saturday will be the fourth game in a week's time for the Lady Hornets after a Wednesday game against Grambling State in Montgomery.
Ayana Emmanuel leads Alabama State in scoring at 17.2 points per game, shooting 47.1 (33-for-70) percent from the floor and 39.1 (9-for-23) percent from beyond the arc. She is joined in double figures by
Shmya Ward, the reigning SWAC Player of the Week, who is averaging 17.0 points and 10.3 rebounds per game after a double-double against Grambling State.
Meanwhile,
Jayla Crawford is averaging 10.8 points per game while shooting 36.4 (20-for-55) and 86.4 (19-for-22) percent from the free throw line. Both she, and Emmanuel, are approaching 800 career points entering the weekend.
