MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State opened the season with a 5-2 victory over Point in non-conference tennis action Friday afternoon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center.
Alabama State (1-0) swept through doubles' play to pick up the first point of the match, with number two and three winning easily. The team of
Juan Rodriguez and
Chris Andre picked up a 6-0 victory at number two doubles, while the team of
Ruan Du Preez and
Assil Boussayri picked up a 6-1 victory in their first match in an Alabama State uniform.
The Hornets picked up four wins in singles play to win the match, including the clinching match won by Du Preez at number two singles. He claimed a three-set victory in his first singles match; 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 over Point's Joe Klokow. Other winners in singles play included Boussayri (number three), Rodriguez (number four), and
Alejo Calvis in straight sets at number six as he blanked Daniel Sheldon 6-0, 6-0.
The Hornets return to action Saturday afternoon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, facing North Alabama as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The matches are scheduled to start at 1:30 pm and admission is free.
