MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fought back after dropping the doubles' point against North Alabama, to pick up a 4-3 victory over the Lions at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center Saturday.
Alabama State (2-0) dropped the doubles' point despite winning at number two to fall behind 1-0, but the Hornets made up for it in singles with wins at four of the six positions.
Chris Andre picked up a 7-6, 6-1 victory at number one, while
Ruan Du Preez won 6-2, 6-1 at number two singles.
The Hornets picked up another singles' win at number three with
Assil Boussayri picking up a 6-3, 6-4 victory; however, it was freshman
Kristofer Johnson who clinched the match playing in his first career match for Alabama State. He claimed a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Tim Heslin to push Alabama State to their second consecutive victory to open the season.
The Hornets return to action Wednesday afternoon at the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center, facing Mercer as part of a doubleheader with the women's team. The matches are scheduled to start at 1 pm.
Alabama State University is mask-mandatory, and all athletic venues are limited capacity facilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
