MONTGOMERY, Ala. | It will be exactly 300 days since their last competition when the Alabama State women's basketball team takes the floor at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome at 5 p.m. Monday, as the Lady Hornets welcome Jackson State to open the 2021 season.
Alabama State will begin the 2021 season the same way it ended the 2020 season, facing off against the reigning conference champion Jackson State (2-4, 1-0). The two squads met in the SWAC Quarterfinals on March 10, 2020, with the Lady Tigers taking the contest, 71-53.
The game marks the beginning of
Freda Freeman-Jackson's 23
rd season at the helm of the program. She is the all-time winningest coach in program history, amassing 317 victories, and has led Alabama State to three SWAC regular season championships, three SWAC tournament titles and three appearances in the NCAA Tournament.
The Lady Hornets will be led by the junior guard duo of
Jayla Crawford and
Ayana Emmanuel, who were named to the Preseason All-SWAC Second Team. They both played in all 30 games in the 2019-2020 season and averaged exactly 11.0 points.
SCOUTING JACKSON STATE
Monday's game will be the conference opener for Alabama State, while Jackson State opened its title defense with an eight-point win at Alabama A&M Saturday. The Lady Tigers are led by SWAC Preseason Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year Ameshya Williams, who is averaging 15.7 points and 10.7 rebounds per game.
