Alabama State defeats Alabama A&M in Huntsville to complete series sweep

HUNTSVILLE, Ala. | Alabama State (9-14, 7-2 SWAC) dominated rival Alabama A&M with a 3-0 sweep on Friday afternoon in Elmore Gymnasium.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After Alabama A&M got off to a quick 4-0 start in the opening set, the Hornets responded with a run to gain an 8-6 advantage to force a Bulldog timeout.
  • The Hornets continued to control the momentum out of the break, going up five at 11-6 before extending their lead to double-digits at 20-10 to force another timeout before taking the first set 25-10.
  • Alabama State scored the first five points in the second set before Alabama A&M reduced the lead to a point.
  • With the score at 10-7, the Hornets began to pull away with a 7-3 run to force the first timeout of the second set from Alabama A&M.
  • Out of the break, the Hornets extended their lead to double figures at 21-11, and later took a 2-0 lead into halftime with the 25-12 win in the set.
  • The third set was a tight battle to start, with the teams' trading points over the first six scores.
  • With the score at 3-3, Alabama State scored 11 unanswered points to take control of the set and never trailed again in the 25-12 win to finish off the sweep on the road. 
GAME NOTES
  • Sophomore Jada Rhodes (Tallahassee, Fla.) led the Hornets with 11 kills, an ace and a dig on the day, while junior Mahogany Vinson (Richton Park, Ill.) added eight kills and three blocks while maintaining a perfect attack percentage.
  • Junior Kalysia Bates (Phenix City, Ala.) logged seven kills and four blocks for nine total points, followed by Amaya Finley (Stockton, Calif.) earned six kills and nine digs on the afternoon.
  • Both setters recorded double digit assists, with lone senior McKenzie Boland (Stockbridge, Ga.) dishing out 22, while junior Madison Beasley (Gilbert, Ariz.) logged 11.
  • The Hornets completed the season sweep over the Bulldogs with the win on Friday while also extending their win streak to five games. 
UP NEXT
Alabama State will return to the court next Saturday for a group of games in Grambling, Louisiana for the SWAC Round-Up. The Hornets will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Saturday at 5 pm along with Texas Southern and Grambling on October 31 at 11 am and 1 pm respectively.
