TAMPA, Fla. |Â No. 21/22 South Florida (2-0) displayed a great defensive effort against Alabama State (0-2) to hand the Hornets a 72-37 loss in non-conference action inside the Yuengling Center on Thursday night.
Alabama State struggled offensively from the start finding themselves down 13-2 and later 21-5 to end the quarter, a deficit they could not recover from. The Hornets made just one field goal (1-11) in the first quarter and shot 21.6 (11-51) percent for the game with six made threes, their lowest shooting percentage since a 2019 meeting between the same two teams where Alabama State shot 16.9 (10-59) percent.
Guards
Ayanna Emmanuel (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) and
Jayla Crawford (Birmingham, Ala.) combined for all six threes, sinking three a piece, with Emmanuel leading the team with 12 points and Crawford adding nine. Graduate transfer
Kailya Jackson (Gainesville, Fla.) recorded seven points including going 5-of-6 from the free throw line.

South Florida had three double-digit scorers on the night led by Sydni Harvey who recorded 22 points, four rebounds and two assists. The Bulls shot nearly 50 percent from the field (26-for-64) and a near perfect 84.6 (11-for-13) percent from the charity stripe.
