MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State split a pair of games on day two of the Black and Gold Tournament Saturday, picking up its first win of the season over in-state rival Alabama A&M in the process.
Alabama State 4, Alabama A&M 0
Alabama State (1-6) used a shutout thrown by
Skyler Sullivan (1-2) to pick up its first win of the season over Alabama A&M after dropping the first game to the Bulldogs in the tournament on Friday. Sullivan went 7.0 innings and scattered five hits, while striking out eight and not yielding a walk in the complete game effort.
Jamaica Flowers and
Aishja Wilcher each picked up a pair of hits, with Wilcher collecting a double and a triple in the process. The pair each scored a run and drove in a run in the victory, while
Jaeda Gardner drove in the other run for Alabama State.
The Hornets scored a pair of runs in each the second and sixth innings to put the game away off Alabama A&M starter Alyssa Lopez (1-2).
Evansville 13, Alabama State 0 (5)
After a scoreless first, Evansville (1-2) scored four runs in the second to start the scoring, before putting eight on the board in the fourth off Alabama State starter
Vanessa Bradford (0-2). Alabama State was held to just four hits by Evansville starter Jaime Nurrenbern (1-0).
Gardner picked up two of the four hits by the Hornets, finishing the nightcap 2-for-2.
The two teams meet again tomorrow morning at 10 am inside the Barbara Williams Softball Complex to conclude the tournament. The game will be carried on the Hornet Sports Network.
Only those listed on the player pass list will be allowed inside the Barbara Williams Softball Complex this season due to social distant seating and COVID-19 protocols. No tickets will be sold at any time for the venue, and masks are mandatory while visiting the Alabama State University campus and its athletic venues.
