BATON ROUGE, La. | Alabama State struggled from the floor against Southern throughout the contest Monday night, falling to the Jags 64-47 at the F.G. Clark Activity Center Monday night.
Alabama State (10-2, 10-2 SWAC) jumped ahead in the first two minutes of the game, 3-2, but it was a 15-0 run by Southern that held Alabama State without a basket for six minutes that put the game away and the Lady Hornets were never able to recover. With the loss, Alabama State drops the season series to Southern and falls into second place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) standings.
Jayla Crawford led Alabama State with 18 points, connecting on 7-for-15 of her shots from the floor, while also grabbing five rebounds and dishing out three assists.
Shmya Ward added seven points and four rebounds in limited action for Alabama State who finished the night shooting 32.1 (18-for-56) percent from the floor and 22.7 (5-for-22) percent from beyond the arc.
Amani McWain led three Southern players in double figures with 15 points and 17 rebounds, while the team shot 43.6 (24-for-55) percent from the floor and 26.7 (4-for-15) percent from beyond the arc.
Alabama State returns to action Wednesday afternoon on the road in Lorman (Miss.), facing Alcorn State. The game is scheduled for 2 pm and will be carried by the Hornet Sports Network.
