MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Eastern Michigan jumped ahead early and was able to hold on for a 2-1 victory over Alabama State at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Saturday night.
Eastern Michigan (1-0) was able to get a run in each the first and sixth innings to jump ahead 2-0 before Alabama State (1-4) was able to get their lone run across the plate in the sixth on an RBI groundout by
Jabronski Williams that scored
Cristopher DeGuzman from third.
The Hornets were held to five hits by three different Eastern Michigan pitchers, with DeGuzman picking up a pair in the loss.
Jacknell Guzman (0-1) suffered the loss, working just 0.1 innings and allowed one run on three walks and a hit batter.
Osvaldo Mendez came on in relief to work 5.0 innings and allowed one run on three hits.
Meanwhile, a trio of pitchers –
Jordan Gould,
Ryan Velazquez, and
Britt Buckelew – combined to work the final 3.2 innings and allowed just one hit with four strikeouts.
The two teams wrap up the two-game set Sunday afternoon with first pitch scheduled for 1 pm at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex. Only those listed on the player pass list will be admitted into the venue due to socially distant seating. Alabama State is a mask mandatory campus, as are each of the athletic venues.
