MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State found itself down big in the first half but battled back to pull to within seven before falling 86-76 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action Saturday night.
Texas Southern led by double digits in the first half, grabbing a 21-point lead at the break, before Alabama State battled back three times to pull to within seven. However, timely free throw shooting down the stretch helped Texas Southern hang on for the win.
Jordan Cousin led four Alabama State players in double figures, pouring in 21 points in his first career start. He finished the night hitting 7-for-12 from the floor, including four three-pointers. Meanwhile,
Kenny Strawbridge added 19 points and
LaTrell Tate 16 in the loss, with
DJ Jackson adding 13 points.
Alabama State finished the night shooting 38.2 (26-for-68) percent from the floor and 40.7 (11-for-27) percent from beyond the arc, while also connecting on 72.2 (13-for-18). Meanwhile, Michael Weathers paced five players in double figures for Texas Southern, finishing with a game-high 23 points.
Alabama State plays its final home game of the season Monday night against Prairie View A&M, with tip set for 8 pm at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.
