MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State and Prairie View A&M battled wire-to-wire inside the Dunn-Oliver Acadome Monday night, with the Panthers sliding past Alabama State 70-67 in Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) action.
The two teams traded the lead four times and there were four ties in the contest, with each team holding a nine-point advantage – Alabama State in the first half and Prairie View A&M in the second. The Hornets trailed by two with under 30 seconds remaining when they forced a Prairie View A&M turnover but could not convert on the opposite end. The Panthers hit one of two free throws to seal it with just six-tenths of a second remaining.
DJ Heath led Alabama State with 23 points and three assists, while
Kevion Stewart added 11.
Kenny Strawbridge led Alabama State with 10 rebounds as the Hornets finished the night shooting 41.2 (21-for-51) percent from the floor and 38.5 (5-for-13) percent from beyond the arc in the loss. They also converted on 69.0 (20-for-29) percent from the free throw line and grabbed 41 total rebounds.
Alabama State returns to action on the road Thursday night against Grambling State in one of just two remaining regular season contests.
