BIRMINGHAM, Ala. | Alabama State redshirt freshman Ryan Nettles was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Offensive Player of the Week and the Newcomer of the Week after his performance against Southern on Friday night.

Nettles played in his first collegiate game, and first game in three years, and finished the night 16-for-27 in passing for 149 yards. He threw a pair of touchdown passes – one to Jeremiah Hixon and the other to Michael Jefferson. His long of 32 yards came near the end of the first half when he rolled right and found Hixon in the back of the end zone with 1:08 to play, tying the game at 7-all.

Alabama State is off this week as they were scheduled to play Alcorn State who opted out of the season. They will return to action on March 20 against Jackson State at ASU Stadium with kick scheduled for 2 pm, and the game can be seen on ESPN3.
