MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State fell behind early after giving up eight runs through the first three innings, responding seven in back-to-back innings before falling to Bradley 11-7 at the Wheeler-Watkins Baseball Complex Saturday night.
Bradley was able to put three on the board in each of the first and second innings, before adding a pair in the top of the third to take an 8-0 lead. However, Alabama State responded with three of their own in the third to trim the lead to 8-3 when
Trenton Jamison drove a three-run double to left to score
Cameron Hearn,
Jayden Sloan, and
Cristopher DeGuzman.
They would add four more in the fourth inning to trim the deficit to one, beginning with an
Angel Jimenez home run to left to trim the deficit to 8-4. They would trim it to 8-6 on a two-run double by Sloan to left before Hearn recorded an RBI groundout to get the deficit to just one. Bradley was able to answer with three in the fifth for the final margin.
Jamison finished the day 2-for-5 with three runs batted in, while DeGuzman finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs scored. Sloan also finished 2-for-4 for the Hornets who pounded out 10 hits.
Breon Pooler (0-2), the first of four pitchers, suffered the loss working 2.0 innings and allowed eight runs (five earned) on six hits.
Osvaldo Mendez (2.0 innings / 2 runs / 2 hits),
Payton Harris (4.0 innings / 1 run / 2 hits / 6 strikeouts, and
Ryan Velazquez (1.0 inning / 2 strikeouts) combined for the final eight innings for Alabama State.
The two teams will meet in the final game of the series with first pitch scheduled for 11 am, and due to COVID-19 protocols only those listed on the player pass list will be admitted into the venue due to socially distant seating. Alabama State is a mask mandatory campus, as are each of the athletic venues.
