MONTGOMERY, Ala. | Alabama State dropped their first Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) match of the year Sunday afternoon, falling to Jackson State 4-3 in the SWAC Pod.
Alabama State (5-6, 5-1 SWAC) dropped the doubles' point when they dropped matches at number one and three by identical 6-4 scores. The Lady Hornets were leading at number two with the team
Bea Acena and
Urska Velec when play was halted.
Alabama State picked up singles wins at number one, three, and four to narrow the margin.
Madalena Andrade picked up a hard-fought three set win at number one over Nina Zhang 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, before Velec picked up a straight set win at number three (6-3, 6-3).
Francesca Duca picked up a 6-0, 6-4 victory for the Lady Hornets at number four singles for their third point of the day.
The Lady Hornets dropped a pair of hard fought two-set matches at number two and five, while falling in a three-set match at number six singles.
They return to action against Jacksonville State on March 23 at home. No fans will be allowed inside the Olean Black Underwood Tennis Center. Alabama State University is a mask mandatory campus, including all of its athletic venues.
